Why Set Goals? In order to Determine Your Future.

When you set goals for yourself, you put yourself in
control. Research has shown that goal-setting enhances
performance in all areas of life. By setting goals, you
increase your level of motivation to accomplishment.

All this sound like too much optimistic thinking? If so,
that is what drives entrepreneurship. Nobody starts a
business thinking they can't do it. We are optimists by
definition.

Set goals and you will reach some of them. Set no goals and
reach no goals. When listening to a tape by John Wooden I
heard him make a statement that both defined Success, and in
my mind heightened in me the need to set my goals.

"Success is peace of mind that can be obtained only from the
self-satisfaction of knowing that you have made the effort
to do the very best of which you are capable."

I rewound the tape and played that phrase again. And again.
And again. I felt like I had just discovered the Hope
diamond. John Wooden was teaching me something that I should
have learned way back when I was a Boy Scout. But it never
sank in - until that moment. Success is making the effort to
do your best. Do that, and you can never fail. Don't do
that, and you can never succeed.

Set Your Goals In These Areas.

Develop goals in these 7 areas of life:
Family and Home
Financial and Career
Spiritual and Ethical
Physical and Health
Social and Cultural(Make the World a Better Place)
Mental(Attitude) and Educational
Pleasure(Happiness) and Artistic

Make sure you write your goals down and develop a time
frame. Let your mind wander to the furthest reaches. Let the
ideas that you may not be conscious of flow. You may be
amazed at where your life may be taking you. After you put
down your general goals in loose time periods, you will weed
out the passing fancies and set an actual date for each of
your accomplishments. But for now, make a long list of all
the things you want to do, be, see, and own over the entire
total of your lifetime.

Thinking a goal through.

When you are thinking about how to achieve goals, asking the
following questions can help you to focus on the sub-goals
that lead to their achievement:
What skills do I need to achieve this?
What information and knowledge do I need?
What help, assistance, or collaboration do I need?
What resources do I need?
What can block progress?
Am I making any assumptions?
Is there a better way of doing things?

The Dos and Don'ts.

There are two kinds of goals: outcome goals and performance
goals. When you state an outcome goal, you set yourself up
for failure. Performance goals, however, involve tasks.

Make a list of what´s in it for you. We need rewards for
performance goals. Some people will tell you that a goal is
just a dream with a date on it. Often, though, the dreams
are what we are able to have due to reaching our goals.

Break each stage into basic tasks.

Short-list the primary things that need to be done first.
When you take the basic (daily) tasks and follow them
through - they should lead you to and through your more long
term goals.

Work you way through all the areas of your life until you
have organized your life´s goals.

The "One Minute Manager" has a good "course check" phrase
that should be repeated at least every day. "Take A Minute.
Look At Your Goals. Look At Your Performance. See If Your
Behavior Matches Your Goals." Not only will this help keep
you on top of your effort - it serves to remind you about
the why and the bigger picture.

What Can Go Wrong?

1. You can have outcome goals instead of performance goals.
2. You can set goals that are unrealistically high. Your
goals should not be based on your best performance. No-
one is expected to sustain a ‘best´ performance. That is
unrealistic. Set your goals based on your average
performance.
3. You can set goals that are too low and do not provide a
challenge. People who are afraid of failure will often set
themselves goals that are too low. You need a challenge in
order to grow, to learn and to achieve.
4. You can set goals that are too vague. Your goals should
be based on a clear understanding of what you want to
achieve, and the skills and knowledge needed.
5. You can fail to organize your goals and tasks.
6. You can fail to prioritize your goals.

How to Start to Achieve Your Lifetime Goals.

Once you have set your lifetime goals, now set a 20 year
plan of smaller goals that should be achieved if you are to
reach your lifetime plan. Then set a 10 year plan, 5 year
plan, 18 month plan, 3 month plan, and 1 week plan of
progressively smaller goals that should be reached to
achieve your lifetime goals. Finally set a daily to-do list
of things that you should do today to achieve your lifetime
goals. At this stage many goals may simply be to read books
and gather information on the achievement of your goals so
that you can improve the quality and realism of your goal-
setting. Finally review your plans, and make sure that they
fit the way in which you want to live your life.

Staying on Course.

Once you have decided your first goal plans, keep the
process going by reviewing and updating your to-do list on a
daily basis. Some people recommend doing this as the last
thing done the day before, others as the first thing done in
the morning - this is up to you. Periodically review your
other plans, and modify them to reflect your changing
priorities.

Will you reach all your goals in the original time frame? I
doubt it, few do. But will you reach some on or before their
date? Definitely! Is it all worth it? Well let me put it
this way: This is one of those exercises that will save your
life!

Till next time. Good luck and God Bless.
Remember, IdeasWIN. Develop yours, Chris

How to Inspire Others to Peak Performance By Nido R. Qubein

It's probably true that most people who work with us will
never care as deeply as we do about building our business
and serving our clients. If they did, they'd probably be
working for themselves.

Yet there's a great deal we can do to raise the level of
their commitment and inspire them to peak performance. The
operative word in the preceding sentence is "inspire". You
can demand that people who work for you be punctual, or that
they perform at a certain level of output, or even that they
do things reasonably well. Yet real commitment can only be
inspired. And, inspiring people is what great leaders like
John F. Kennedy and Lee Iaccoca did best.

How do great leaders such as these inspire others to commit
themselves to their goals? It's not just that they have
charismatic personalities, or that they give a lot of
high-powered motivational talks. What they do is
communicate their vision so forcefully that other people
adopt it as their own vision.

For example, in the early sixties, President Kennedy set his
sights on putting a man on the moon, and told the American
people "We can do it!" He said it with such conviction that
masses of people believed it, and committed themselves to
making it happen. And, sure enough, in less than a decade,
the first human being had walked on the moon.

Lee Iaccoca stepped into the ailing Chrysler Corporation and
said "We're going to turn this company around!" With clear
goals, a solid plan of action, and a strong conviction, he
was able to inspire enough commitment from the U.S. Congress
that he secured the largest loan ever made to a private
company. Then he inspired enough commitment in thousands of
Chrysler workers to enable the company to pay back the loan
ahead of schedule.

That's the formula for any leader to inspire commitment --
clear goals, a solid plan of action, and a strong
conviction. If you can communicate that to the people who
work with you, you will have the kind of loyalty that makes
them go the second mile. And the third and fourth miles if
that's what it takes to get the job done.
