4. Today's Feature Article
-----------------------------------------------------------
One of the most often recurring themes in literature, on
stage and even more on screen is the reluctant hero. Or even
the unknowing & unwilling hero. This is the stuff of great
comic books too!
I was watching TV the other night and it surfaced again.
Here is a young woman who, through a series of unusual
circumstances, discovers that she exists with the ability
and responsibility to quell evil. Her reason for existence
is to change to world.
How many of us have thought that, somehow, we are just a bit
different from everyone else? I think most people have had
the feeling at least once that there MUST be more to life
then THIS(whatever it is that you have now). That thought is
what is behind what has been called 'male menopause' and a
bunch of less civilized terms.
Not that it's, of itself, a bad thing to do - but we often
look in the mirror and sing "Is that all there is?" That
feeling of 'Hey I'm 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 and what have I
really accomplished with my life? There must be more to my
existence than to just being a Postal Clerk or a Nurse or a
wife or a technician.
We all have a desire to be or at least feel like we are
something more than just average. In my opinion this is not
only what causes stories with that as a backdrop to be so
popular...it is part of why so very many of them are
conceived.
What is it that causes every Clark Kent to want to be a
Superman? Why brings many a 'Girl Next Door' to dream about
being a beauty queen or Princess? Why do many walk like,
wear their hair like, talk like or dress like the famous? It
appears that even some of the worst criminals do what they
do for their minute of fame.
I believe the reason lies in a simple truth. One which we
hide from our conscious mind. A fact that we do not wish to
accept because of it's ramifications. Here it is, baldfaced.
Ultimately, aren't we all put here to change the world? We
are supposed to count for something. To amount to something,
to BE Somebody.
Part of my personal feeling about what causes us to feel
this way is the God given spark of life that we carry in us.
We were put on this Earth for a reason. Only those who are
strongly anti-faith could believe anything else.
So if we are here for a reason, as I firmly believe, what is
it? Is that reason the same for you or me? Why do we exist?
Well, I am not prepared to answer that for anyone but
myself. But this much is obvious: it is NOT to watch TV or
sports, it is not to have a job or drive the biggest SUV,
and it is not to trample over others feelings or lives to
prove ourselves to ourselves.
Do you have to have a cape and a cave to be a Superhero? I
think not. You can achieve that status SO many ways. Just in
case you've been looking for meaning in your life, allow me
to list a few.
Give, expecting nothing in return,
Choose your values well, and stick to them - no matter what,
Honor you commitments to others, and those to yourself,
Love deeply, and often,
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,
Be there for your family and friends,
Judge not - period,
Don't take life so seriously,
When you are wronged, forgive AND forget,
Say Thank You, I'm Sorry, & I Love You often - and mean it.
Are there more? Thousands. Will any of us do them all - or
do them perfectly? I doubt it. Can we change the world by
trying? Oh Yes! Will you have holidays or toys or streets
named after you? Why not? The people they name them after
will be just as human and imperfect as you are.
Remember this. Great people are simply people who are made
great by their choices. Choose well, for the future of us
all depends on it.
Till next time. Good luck and God Bless.
Remember, IdeasWIN. Develop yours, Chris

6. Guest Article
-----------------------------------------------------------
By: Dr. Donald E. Wetmore
It´s interesting. Technology is often heralded as a servant
for us yet frequently we become a servant to it. E-mail was
trumpeted as the new communications tool that would surely
put first class snail mail out of business. Last year, the
U. S. Post Office delivered more pieces of first class mail
than ever and e-mails exceeded the volume of first class
mailings. We have created another layer of communicating
with one another and an additional responsibility to monitor
and manage.
E-mail is a useful tool but many feel controlled by this new
vehicle. The average businessperson is getting around 80 e-
mails per day and many feel that about 80% of the messages
in their In Box are of little or no value.
So, as always, rising to the occasion, I have four
suggestions to help you to become better at Easing E-mail.
1. Get off the lists. The best way to deal with a
problem is to never have it. If you are receiving a lot of
unwanted e-mails, ask to be removed from the various lists.
This would include your inclusion in unwanted cc lists or
unappreciated solicitations from those promising unlimited
wealth without risk or effort.
2. Unlisted address. Just like getting an unlisted
telephone number that you share only with those whom you
want to give direct access, you might want to get a separate
e-mail address that you use only for the important
communications you wish to receive.
3. Check it once or twice per day. Many I speak with
are become chained to their e-mail server, monitoring
incoming e-mail on a continuous basis. Maybe this is because
e-mail creates its own sense of urgency, but most of the
communications are not all that urgent. I let my incoming
batch up and I respond to them a couple of times per day.
4. Deal with it. Like handling paper, you don't want to
get into the shuffling blues where you read e-mail,
postpone action, save it, re-read it later, and allow things
to slip through the cracks. As you open each e-mail do one
of the following:
a. If it requires a quick response, (it will only take
a minute or two), respond to it and delete it.
b. If it requires a response but is not the best use of
your time, try to think of a way of delegating it. There´s a
lot of difference between I do it and It gets done.
c. If it is going to take any serious amount of time to
respond ( beyond a minute or two), schedule it for action in
your Day Planner and then download the message, save it, or
print it out for future action.
I personally receive approximately 250 e-mails per day and
by practicing the suggestions above, I can handle that
volume in about an hour, taking advantage of this fantastic
tool but not being controlled by it to the distraction of
more important tasks in my day.
There is a big hole in your day that drains away productive
time. I discuss this in an article entitled, The Big Hole
in Your Day. It´s free. To get your copy, e-mail your
request for hole to ctsem@msn.com

9. The Last Word: PONDER POINTS
-----------------------------------------------------------
There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less
than the long range risks of comfortable inaction.
