4. Today's Feature Article
-----------------------------------------------------------

It's Coming - Are You Ready?

I was reading in our local paper today about a large plant
shutting down. It happens every day. The papers and TV are
full of the changes that take place as business adapts to
our "Brave New World."

There was a particularly poignant quote from one of the
union reps helping people cope with this event. During the
interview he made this telling statement. "When you work at
something for 20 years - you become the job."

How sadly true for so many of us. I once heard this concept
addressed from stage. At a seminar a young man who had built
his business to the point of wealth said, "Why is it that
when someone asks 'What do you do?' we say, 'I'm a doctor or
a lawyer or whatever.' That's not what you DO, that is just
your JOB."

A gentleman I know works stocking shelves in a local grocery
store is an example of the mindset. He has been at his
occupation for 15 years. Only in the last year has he become
full time. But when he talks about the store it is as if it
is HIS. It is WE are doing this, and OUR policy is and MY
prices are better....

Does this company owe him anything? Only his pay and
benefits while he puts in his 8-10 hours a day. Did the
company whose plant is closing have any responsibility to
those 20 year workers? It's all a matter of mindset. The
company exists to make money for the company, period. It
does not exist for the benefit of it's employees.

There is a lingering attitude that my employer will take
care of me. And another that my job is secure and will last
as long as I want/need it. I'm sure that sometime, somewhere
these things were true. But that day is gone.

We live in a time of change. More than that....we live in a
CULTURE of change. We are elated with progress, yet seem
amazed that it brings obsolescence.

Knowing this: How then shall we live?

I once heard a wise man say the only security you have is
your ability to perform. I would add to that. We must
EMBRACE change or become obsolete ourselves. Not only do we
need the ability to perform, we need the ability to adapt.

Where does your future lie? Is it in the same job you have
now? Is it even in the same industry? No one can say.

Here is something to think on. In the final analysis we all
work for ourselves. Even if you have a job you are working
for your benefit, for your future, trading your hours today
for the various benefits you receive. But it is only as
secure as the moment. For as the moment passes, so can that
security.

Sounds glum. It isn't. You see, knowing the truth can only
aid you. Having the information arms you. The ancient
saying, "Forewarned is Forearmed" is as right as rain.

Since you know you are an independent contractor in life all
you need to do is ACT LIKE IT. Make your 'business' work. As
if your life depended on it, after all, it does. Look to the
future, diversify your knowledge. Prepare for change and 'Go
With The Flow.' Be ready and you will Be Ready.

There is no better motto for life the that of the marvelous
Boy Scouts. Be prepared.

Be prepared to win, and sometimes you will.

Till next time. Good luck and God Bless.
Remember, IdeasWIN. Develop yours, Chris

The Little Guy Does Win. Here's How...

There are many philosophies and theories regarding the
"Big Bang" theory. We know it happened many years ago,
but whatever existed previously, will remain a mystery
long after you and I take our leave. However, the result
gave us the start to bring us to where we are today.

At the beginning, no one had an advantage over the other.
In fact, nobody had anything. We all started from
scratch. Ambition, strength & determination separated the
masses from those who would shine above the rest.

The story today is similar. There are a few "haves",
a lot in the middle and an ever-increasing number of
"have-nots". The trick is the same it has ever been, to
transpose from the "have-nots" to the "haves". You see,
at one point, all those who made it were little guys.
Granted, on occasions, it may be a generation or more
ago, but the principle holds good. The abundance had to
initially be created by someone from, essentially,
nothing.

Here's an illustrative example:

The World Swimming Championships have just been completed
in Japan. For only the fourth time in its 28-year
history, the USA did not win the meet. In fact, the
little guy blew them away. Australia, a country with only
20 million residents resoundingly defeated world-swimming
powers - Germany, Russia, China & The US. How does this
happen? Is it by chance? Did many champions absent
themselves? No, that's not it.

A number of years ago, the Australian Institute of Sport
(AIS) was founded. It has become the epicenter of sport
for the south pacific nation. It is a sports academy,
where athletes go to pursue their chosen sporting career
with zest and vigor. To say it has excelled could almost
be an understatement. Due to The AIS, this small country
rated very highly in the 2000 Olympics as well.

The point is, the little guy can do it. The little guy
has done it. The little guy remains little or grows as
big as his self-imposed restrictions allow. Ten to
fifteen years ago, Australia wasn't achieving what it is
today in this area. It has taken a good number of years
of trial and error, planning, failing, retrying, learning
etc. to bring them to where they are today. To show you
the magnitude of this self-belief look at how much have
had to rise from outback paddlers to become legends of
the pool.

Let's use The US as a benchmark to create a common
denominator, based on population. The final standing for
Gold Medals was Australia, 13; US, 9; China, 9. China
would have between 2 & 3 Gold Medals. The US remain at 9.
Australia has a staggering 260. Anyone can become
anything they want if they want it enough and will do
what it takes to make it happen.

You might be thinking "Oh yeah, that's a whole country.
What can I do on my own?" Everything needs a starting
point. Quite often, we recognize our starting point.
Invariably, we fall down on the long-term execution and
remain "The Little Guy". Your goals get the respect they
deserve. If you hold them in high regard and make them
your #1 focus, your results will reflect this. If they
appear to be immovable mountains, then that's what they
will be.

Many successful businesspeople and sporting legends hold
the true value of self-belief very close to their heart.
They must believe in their capabilities to give
themselves the chance to achieve what it is that is so
important to them. Current size is irrelevant.
Persistence and knowledge are every bit as important too.

The little guy has won before, is winning today and will
win again tomorrow. The decision lies entirely with you
as to whether you would like to join tomorrow's group or
not. It's a very worthwhile cause.

You may be the little guy today, but there is always
tomorrow. Use tomorrow as your launch pad. Ensure it's
tomorrow and not the day after, as for some, continued
procrastination assures that tomorrow never comes...
